Fredericksburg - Lake Brownwood State Park

View US New Mexico Texas 2018 Summer on FierceOrc's travel map.

At Enchanted Rock State Natural Area we looked up at the bare rock glistening in the sun and at each other, decided to leave the climbing to the youngsters and instead struggled through the sand around the foot a little.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

After all the commercial RV parks of the first week with all their fancy facilities, I finally had the long-awaited opportunity to introduce Leonie to the glamorless austerities of state park overnighting in the US. As it turned out, Lake Brownwood State Park was at the highest classifiable fire risk and under a total burn ban, so that we could use neither the grill nor the fire rink to cook the steak we had been carrying with us in the freezer for over a week. And there really aren’t that many state parks in this part of Texas to offer second chances. Well, there isn’t much of anything in this part of Texas. Except distance, of course. Which, in and of itself, is one of the reasons for us to come here. To be, not to do, except to drive.

We’ll be donating the charcoal, grill topper and lighter fluid to Goodwill when we get back to Albuquerque.
