Bandera - San Antonio - Seguin

View US New Mexico Texas 2018 Summer on FierceOrc's travel map.

We had planned this for tomorrow, but due to the ongoing changes we drove right by the Cascade Caverns today, so we decided we might as well take the tour now. It was no Carlsbad Caverns, but fascinating nonetheless.

On to San Antonio, in unnerving Sunday afternoon interstate traffic, and two of the missions the city is famous for in the US: San José and San Juan. Impressed? Not so much. The Alamo? Later.

Mission San Juan

We spent a lovely evening with Layne and Pat Hoppe (my friend John’s parents; thanks, King) in Seguin (I will let you figure how it’s pronounced), who graciously immersed us in a true Texas dinner experience: Willie’s Grill & Icehouse. Great food (unless you’re a vegetarian) at big portions in a giant space. And we got to sneak a peek at the Texas phenomenon of Buc-ee’s along I35: not just any old gas station, but one with over 60 pumps. It’s like a whole other country.
